One of England's most beautiful castles has been transformed into a giant floral wonderland this summer

If you're looking for a day out that's a little different this summer, this might just be one of the most beautiful things happening anywhere in the North.

Raby Castle in County Durham has launched its spectacular new Castle in Bloom installation, transforming one of England's most impressive castles into a floral-filled wonderland that's part art exhibition, part garden inspiration and entirely Instagram-worthy.

Running until the end of August, the experience sees the historic castle, visitor buildings and surrounding grounds bursting with flowers, colour and creativity, creating what could be one of the most unique summer days out in the North East. And honestly, it looks incredible.

A Castle Filled With Flowers

While Raby Castle is always worth a visit, Castle in Bloom takes things to another level.

Visitors are welcomed through a medieval passageway lined with tumbling flowers, soft grasses and fragrant wild blooms before entering a series of installations that weave their way through some of the castle's most magnificent rooms. The displays have been designed around the theme of nature, light and landscape, bringing the outside world into the historic interiors in a way that's both dramatic and surprisingly beautiful.

One of the standout moments comes in the castle's grand Entrance Hall, where a huge suspended orb made from dried grasses harvested from Raby's own Walled Gardens hangs above a landscape of roots, moss and winding grasses.

Upstairs in the spectacular Baron's Hall, visitors will find a giant sun-inspired floral portal suspended in front of the room's towering windows. Made from thousands of strands of dried flowers, it's designed to represent the contrast between darkness and light, mirroring the installation below.

Elsewhere throughout the castle, colourful floral sculptures, meadows of flowers and contemporary botanical displays create unexpected moments around every corner.

More Than Just The Castle

The beauty of a visit to Raby is that the floral displays are only part of the experience. Outside, the award-winning Walled Gardens are at their absolute peak during summer, with colourful planting schemes, beautiful borders and carefully designed spaces created by renowned garden designer Luciano Giubbilei alongside Lady Barnard.

The wider estate is equally impressive. Visitors can explore the 14th-century castle, wander through the historic Deer Park where red and fallow deer roam freely, browse the Coach House Shop and stop for lunch or afternoon tea at The Vinery Café, which is also embracing the floral theme with a specially created afternoon tea inspired by Castle in Bloom.
