The Dorset Edit: A Weekend by the Sea

If you’re looking for the perfect UK staycation by the sea, Dorset should be right at the top of your list. It’s one of those destinations that manages to feel both relaxed and elevated at the same time - think crystal-clear water, dramatic Jurassic Coast views, and some of the best beaches in Dorset all within easy reach. It’s effortlessly chic without trying too hard, and after spending a full weekend here, it’s safe to say it completely lives up to the hype.

We based ourselves between Poole and Sandbanks, which is easily one of the best areas to stay in Dorset if you want that mix of accessibility and coastal luxury. Everything feels within easy reach - from iconic landmarks to some of the best beaches in Dorset - but you still get that relaxed, beachy atmosphere from the moment you arrive. Think slow mornings with sea views and evenings that turn into sunset drinks without much effort.

For accommodation, there are a few standout options if you’re looking for luxury hotels in Poole and Sandbanks. Harbour Heights Hotel is perfect if you want panoramic views across the water and a boutique feel, while Sandbanks Hotel is ideal for a true beachfront stay where you can step straight onto the sand. If you prefer something a little more tucked away, Hotel du Vin Poole offers a more intimate, stylish base near the quay. All three are perfect for a Dorset coastal break.

We started Saturday exploring one of the most famous landmarks on the Jurassic Coast, Durdle Door. It’s one of those places that genuinely looks better in real life - the limestone arch, the turquoise water, the scale of it all. Just next door, Lulworth Cove offers a completely different feel, with its perfectly curved bay and calmer, almost Mediterranean vibe. Visiting both in one morning is easily one of the best things to do in Dorset, and the walk between them is part of the experience.

By lunchtime, we were ready to slow things down, and this is where Dorset’s food scene really shines. We booked into Shell Bay Restaurant, which is exactly what you want from a Dorset beach restaurant - fresh seafood, relaxed atmosphere, and views over the water. Another must-visit is Rick Stein Sandbanks, one of the most well-known seafood restaurants in Dorset, perfect for a slightly more elevated but still laid-back dining experience.

The afternoon was all about unwinding at Studland Bay, which is often considered one of the best beaches in Dorset thanks to its wide sandy shoreline and peaceful setting. We spent most of our time around Knoll Beach, which feels quieter and more untouched. It’s the kind of place where you can properly switch off - swim, sunbathe, and completely lose track of time.

For dinner, we headed back towards Poole, where there are some of the best restaurants in Dorset for seafood. The Cliff offers a modern, airy setting with incredible views, while Rockfish Poole is a go-to if you’re looking for something more casual but still consistently excellent. The seafood here is exactly what you want from a Dorset food experience - fresh, simple, and done really well.

Sunday was slower, as any good Dorset weekend itinerary should be, so we drove out to Lyme Regis. It’s completely different to Sandbanks, with a more traditional seaside feel - think pastel houses, a historic harbour, and plenty of spots to stop for coffee or something sweet. It’s also known for fossil hunting, which adds to its charm and makes it one of the more unique places to visit in Dorset.

Before heading home, we made time for Sandbanks Beach itself, which is easily one of the best sandy beaches in the UK. It’s wide, clean, and has that slightly more polished feel while still being relaxed enough for a final swim or walk along the shore.

And of course, no weekend in Dorset would be complete without fish and chips. If you’re looking for the best fish and chips in Dorset, Rockfish Poole is hard to beat - fresh, sustainably sourced, and exactly what you want after a day by the sea. It’s one of those meals that’s best enjoyed straight from the box, ideally with a sea view.

The overall vibe of Dorset is exactly what you want from a UK coastal break. It’s stylish without trying too hard, relaxed but still feels special, and full of places you’ll want to come back to. From iconic landmarks like Durdle Door to peaceful spots like Studland Bay, it’s easy to see why it’s considered one of the best destinations for a UK beach weekend.

If you’re planning a Dorset travel guide, searching for a luxury coastal stay in Sandbanks, or simply want a weekend by the beach in the UK, this is one of those trips that delivers on every level - great food, incredible scenery, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel good from start to finish.
