At The Northern Edit, we're constantly championing independent businesses, local makers and brands that are doing things differently.

In a world where it's easier than ever to fill our homes with products that have travelled thousands of miles and arrived at our doors within 24 hours, there's something incredibly special about discovering a business that's still proudly making things here in Yorkshire.

That's exactly why we've fallen a little bit in love with Hug Rug.

Based in Huddersfield and manufactured at the same Yorkshire mill that's been operating since 1954, Hug Rug isn't just another homeware brand. It's a family business, a British manufacturer and the creator of the world's first washable rug, all rolled into one.

And after spending the last few weeks living with one of its rugs in our own Yorkshire home, we can honestly say the quality speaks for itself.

We were recently gifted the English Garden Eco-Washable Rug and it has completely transformed the room it's in. Beautifully designed, incredibly soft underfoot and far more luxurious than we expected from a washable rug, it's one of those pieces that instantly makes a space feel more considered and put together.

More importantly, it feels like something that's been made properly. That might sound like a simple thing, but it's becoming increasingly rare.

Every Hug Rug product is manufactured in Yorkshire using recycled materials and innovative production methods designed to reduce waste. The business remains family-owned, employs local people and continues to invest heavily in British manufacturing despite the challenges facing the sector.

In fact, earlier this year, the team behind Hug Rug travelled to Parliament to call for greater support for British manufacturers, highlighting the pressures created by rising costs and competition from low-cost imports. Their message was simple: if we want British manufacturing to survive, we need to support the businesses that are keeping it alive. It's hard not to agree.

Yorkshire has a rich manufacturing history and Hug Rug feels like a brilliant example of what the future could look like - combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design and sustainability.

The brand has continued to evolve too. Alongside its bestselling washable rugs, runners and doormats, it recently launched a collection of outdoor mats made from ECONYL® regenerated nylon, a recycled material created from waste that would otherwise end up in landfill. The collection is manufactured entirely in Yorkshire and designed to be durable, washable and practical enough for real life. There have also been some beautiful collaborations that showcase the creativity coming out of the business.

A recent partnership with British wildlife artist Sally Swannell brought charming countryside-inspired illustrations to a collection of rugs and runners, celebrating everything from beehives and cottage gardens to hares and blackbirds. The collection perfectly captures the British countryside and Hug Rug's commitment to supporting British artists and craftsmanship.Meanwhile, a collaboration with Scion Living paired the brand's iconic designs with Hug Rug's sustainable outdoor mats, proving that practical products don't have to compromise on style.

What we love most, though, is that none of this feels forced. Hug Rug isn't trying to jump on trends or shout about sustainability because it's fashionable. It simply feels like a business that genuinely cares about making beautiful products, supporting local jobs and creating things that last. And perhaps that's why it feels so relevant right now.

We're all becoming more thoughtful about where we spend our money. Increasingly, we're looking beyond the cheapest option and asking who made it, where it came from and whether it was built to last.

Brands like Hug Rug remind us that sometimes the best things aren't found halfway around the world. Sometimes they're being made right here in Yorkshire.

And if we're serious about supporting local businesses, preserving British craftsmanship and investing in products we'll genuinely love for years to come, those are exactly the businesses we should be championing.

Because buying local isn't just about supporting a business. It's about supporting the people, skills and communities that make Yorkshire such a brilliant place to call home.
